After a short burst of cool air at the start of October, we are now having more seasonal weather here in Charleston, SC. That is, things are pretty hot and steamy considering the time of year. As Halloween draws near, neighborhoods are decorated and pumpkins sit on porches hoping they won't rot and sag too much before the 31st.
The general mood in town seems quite mellow. Maybe it is the calm before the mega party time of Halloween. The College of Charleston girls are preparing the appropriate underwear for the evening and the boys are resting up for the occasion. I think there is also a school break on. So things are a little quite.
The Red Sox are playing the Indians in the playoffs, but there is not much buzz about it in Charleston. A cool little pub named Dunleavy's seems to be a serious Red Sox enclave. The best news about the mild weather is tennis. The evenings bring the perfect conditions for a couple of quick sets and some domestic cans. The courts by Colonial Lake have been pretty empty. But the place needs some maintenance. For a couple of months now, there has been a court under repair. It is sorely needed on the crowded nights. The tennis scene is Charleston is fantastic. The only drawback is that is hard to win a match with so many skilled players around! If there is no room at Colonial Lake, we kick it over to the Jack Adams courts. The lights are actually better there, and the crowd is usually older and less wild. This area of Charleston is great. Tucked in right next to the newly renovated Citadel Stadium, there are a number of neat homes and some great public tennis courts. Like all of Downtown Charleston, this neighbor real estate is getting more and more expensive.
The price of homes in Charleston is way up. They have now flattened off. Even the hype about how Charleston will grow out of control can't get buyers into town. It is a wait and see market at the moment, and it is likely to stay that way for a while.
